Description

Inspired by the menorah that once stood in the Holy Temple, this handcrafted ceramic oil candle was designed to echo one of Judaism’s oldest and most powerful symbols of light. The elongated form guides the eye upward toward the flame, while the carved menorah shape draws the oil toward the wick, allowing the flame to burn steadily. When filled with olive oil and lit, the piece recalls the ancient practice of kindling sacred light, a tradition that has accompanied Jewish life for generations.

The ceramic body is shaped and fired by hand, giving each piece subtle variations in color and texture. The earthy glaze reflects tones often found in the landscapes of the Land of Israel—deep browns, muted greens, and hints of bronze. As the flame flickers above the carved menorah design, the object becomes more than a candle holder; it becomes an intimate moment of reflection, recalling the light that once illuminated the Temple and continues to symbolize spiritual renewal.

“You shall command the children of Israel that they bring you pure olive oil beaten for the light, to cause a lamp to burn continually.”
Exodus 27:20

The Soul Menorah was designed by Mordechai Cohen of Bat Ayin, an inventor and industrial designer whose work often blends engineering with spiritual symbolism. With several patents and decades of creative work behind him, Mordechai seeks to create objects that express Jewish wisdom through thoughtful design. This piece was developed in collaboration with ceramic artist Efrat Alfasi of Odem, whose expertise in traditional ceramics gave form to the design. Together they created this candle as a meaningful object, connecting ancient tradition with contemporary Israeli craftsmanship.
