Description

One man’s candle is a light for many” (Talmud Shabbat 21b, 23a)

Havdalah (which means separation in Hebrew) is a Jewish religious ceremony that marks the symbolic end of Shabbat and ushers in a new week. The Havdalah ceremony includes:

  • Lighting a Havdalah candle with several wicks.
  • Making a blessing (usually) on wine.
  • Smelling sweet spices.

This gorgeous handmade candle stands on a wide base and charms with a depiction of the Holy City of Jerusalem in colors of silver and gold. It is long-burning, beautiful, and a lovely way to bring the beauty of the Holy City to your Havdalah ceremony, wherever you may be. It also makes a charming hostess gift when visiting someone for the holidays or Shabbat.

Safed Candle
Safed Candle

Safed Candles was established by a member of the Breslov Chassidic community in Tzfat (Safed) more than 18 years ago. He wanted to create a small business to provide employment to his small community living in the remote mountain top city.

Tzfat is a mystical city with Kabbalistic roots stretching back to the 1500s. It is fitting that in this beautiful holy location, the small Safed Candle business has grown steadily, employing people who need it and, along the way, bringing more light into the world.

Safed Candles established their small workshop in a building adjacent to the famous Ari Ashkenazi Synagogue. There men and women hand-dipped and wove candles for Jewish ceremonial purposes, making Shabbat candles, havdalah and Hanukah candles, and more.

When the demand for their candles outgrew their small shop, they opened a boutique production facility just outside the old city, proving fortuitous as the shop burned down in 2008. Even more amazing, a few months before the fire, the Safed Candle team had renovated their shop and discovered rooms that were located underground, having been covered over in previous earthquakes. While they were recovering and rebuilding from the fire, they continued working in the recently discovered rooms!

Every Safed Candles candle is still crafted by hand from beeswax and hand-dipped paraffin wax. The Safed Candles team always uses environmentally friendly materials that are safe to burn. They have earned a reputation for making unique and beautiful candles and are sought after by Israelis and visitors to Tzfat.
